Editor's notes:

CCOM was able to use media issues to get disparate community groups throughout the metropolitan area to work together, which helped to set up the historic Mayor Harold Washington elections.

Organizations that followed CCOM into organizing around media issues include: Chicago Media Action. Chicago Progressive Media Network. Chicago Citizens Cable Coalition. Latino Committee on the Media. Latino Cable Coalition. Community Media Workshop / Public Narrative. Chicago Access Corporation / CANTV. Committee for Labor Access / Labor Beat. And others. Links on some local and national media policy issues are at www.9898.us/mp.

Editions of this www.9898.us/ccom site are stored permanently at The Internet Archive, archive.org.

CCOM documents are stored permanently in the large 'Citizens Committee on the Media' collection at the Chicago History Museum (formerly Chicago Historical Society). Cf. www.chicagohistory.org. Phone 312.642.4600.

(A long download time for some devices).

CCOM C.R.A.T. shows CCOM's organizing approach, using media issues to create a new extremely diverse citywide coalition of organizations - - a factor in the historic Mayor Harold Washington elections. We leveraged broadcast companies' longstanding contempt for the community interests they are supposedly licensed to serve.

Our organization grew more as we demanded major public benefits in the area's first cable television ordinances.
