Biography - 21

Charlie has gotten used to telling people that he has had four careers.  The first was the five years he enjoyed being the Associate Pastor at a northwest suburban parish.  One of his major responsibilities there was supervising a religious education program with over 1,300 students.  During this time he and the parish DRE co-authored a workbook on the faith development of catechists and other lay parish leaders.

When he left the active ministry, he used that experience to join an educational publisher, and that quickly led to the formation, with two other partners, of an educational consulting company – Learning Consultants, Inc.  Eventually, this organization focused on training and leadership development, particularly for the administration of non-profit organizations.  This, in turn, led to his authorship of another workbook, which detailed a system for long and short range planning in such settings.

Charlie had always been a closet techie, so he took his consulting expertise in a new direction in the founding of Telecom Consultants Group with several partners, including classmate Carl Kishkunas, specializing in voice and data communications systems.  During this time he completed his MBA, with dual concentrations in technology and training & development.

Finally, Charlie took his technical expertise back to the education sphere when he joined DeVry University as national director of their Telecommunications Management and Computer Information Systems Bachelor’s Degree curricula.  After 17 years at DeVry, he retired as University Dean of Academic Administration.

Charlie and his wife, Barbara, have been married for almost 39 years and have two daughters.  He has been active in his parish, serving over the years in the areas of Liturgy, Adult Education, and Church Building Renovation.  Barbara has worked as the Director of Religious Education at three parishes in Chicago’s north and northwest suburbs.

Now five years into retirement, they are both enjoying reading, travel, and volunteer work.  Charlie is a board member at Ten Thousand Villages, a non-profit retail store which specializes in fair-traded merchandise from artisans in less developed countries.  Barbara works at a resale shop which supports WINGS, an organization for women in abusive relationships.  Both agree it has been an exciting 50 + 1 years!
