He received a B.A. from DePaul University, an M.A. from Purdue University and a Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University, all in English. He began his teaching career at the University of Minnesota, Morris and continued teaching for two decades at Bowling Green State University. He later assumed academic leadership positions at Northern Michigan University, Eastern Kentucky University and St. Norbert College. He recently returned to the faculty at St. Norbert College.

 

Michael and Madonna Coughlin married in l968 and have three children, Moira, Meghan and Micah, and six grandchildren. Madonna passed away in 2002. In 2006 Michael married Mary Ryder who has four children and nine grandchildren. Mary and Michael went to St. Hilary's grammar school together and were fortunate to have reconnected after many years. They travel frequently between their homes in Illinois and Wisconsin.
