"The Freightliner Five" were fired last April by Freightliner Truck, a profitable Cleveland, NC division of Daimler Benz. As Bargaining Committee members for their United Auto Workers local, they had called for a strike instead of a "company union" contract.
Now they are on the road gathering public support to get back their Freightliner jobs and their UAW benefits.
Successful solidarity meetings have already been held in Flint and Detroit. Others are set immediately for Champaign, Illinois (Feb. 2, 11 a.m., Illinois Labor Hour), Chicago, Illinois (Feb. 2, 7 p.m., 37 S. Ashland), and San Francisco (Feb. 23, 3 p.m., 801-2nd Street).
The Freightliner Five's (now also known as "The Cleveland Five") solidarity itinerary keeps growing as they come to personify for many the need for stronger U.S. unions, especially in the largely unorganized U.S. southern states.
The Five tell their own story on their web site www.justice4five.com. More background information and tour details are posted at www.9898.us/3/f5chi80202.htm. (Bob Gallie 1/31/2008)
